When the process is done well, and from the beginning, teams can effectively manage risk. It is nearly impossible to catch up after a poor start.

Unfortunately, I have seen many examples in my career where the APQP process was skipped, or half-heartedly executed often times by teams trying to take short cuts for the sake of saving time. The results are very predictable — poor quality products (in both design and manufacturing) that lead to a host of other problems the destroy profitability and lead to high customer dissatisfaction.
